The canon of books featuring Dandies is, like the breed, scarce. This month a new Dandie book joins the list. ‘Mustard and Pepper’ by Alasdair Hutton (Curly Tale Books) is a children's picture book set in the grounds of Abbotsford, where the two Dandies help the children of Sir Walter Scott to find a missing necklace.


William Gorman’s watercolour illustrations complement the story well. The illustrations set a great mood and tone for the story — Gorman has a clear skill in capturing animals and he presents the action against the beautifully illustrated landscape of Abbotsford.


I was at Abbotsford in 2015 as part of the Dandie Dinmont 200 Event when Alasdair Hutton announced that he was working on the book. It’s wonderful to see this in print in 2019, written by an author based in the Borders and an illustrator and publisher based in Galloway.


This wee book that celebrates the Dandie,will hopefully interest and inspire children about the Dandie. Well done to all involved..


Now to wake my Dandies up and take them out for a wander in our park..fingers crossed they find a necklace..
